Do-it-yourself recipe for Herbal Mouthwash
My family now has switched to a completely natural oral health care. We make our very own remineralizing toothpaste and choose our food according to our oral health needs.
Since switching to our new oral health routine we didn't use the classic mouthwash, especially since the commercial ones have plenty of artificial colors, flavors and chemicals.
Thus, the do-it-yourself mouthwash was our solution and choice. It combines ingredients and herbs that are healing and in the same time cleanse both gums and teeth, all in one easy to use tincture.
This natural mouthwash alkalizes the mouth, kills the germs and leaves a fresh taste in the mouth.
Cloves are usually added to the preparation of homemade mouthwashes for their antibacterial, antiseptic and antiviral effects. In the case of cavities, clove oil and clove paste can be used to stop the pain until you can go to the dentist.
Rosemary helps fight against sore gums and bacteria while having an aromatic taste.
Peppermint, besides the cooling and antibacterial effect, is usually used to give that minty flavor.
Plantain has the ability to speed up the healing process, and it is also efficient for its antimicrobial and antibacterial effects.
Ingredients for homemade Herbal Mouthwash
8 ounces of rum or vodka (for the preparation of the tincture)
2 tablespoons dried Peppermint Leaf
2 tablespoons dried Plantain Leaf
1 Tsp dried cloves or clove powder
1 Tablespoon Rosemary Leaf
15 drops of Cinnamon or Peppermint Essential Oil (optional)
How to prepare Herbal Mouthwash
Use a pint size mason jar; add the herbs in it and dampen all the herbs in boiling water. (This will take out all the herbs' properties).
Add the vodka or rum in the container over the boiling water and the herbs.
Put a lid on it and store it in a dark and cool place for about 2-3 weeks. To help the herbs infuse properly, shake the container daily.
After 2-3 weeks strain the herbs from the tincture using a fine mesh strainer, or cheesecloth. Take away the plants and pour the tincture into other containers for storage.
Add the essential oils tilt the container upside down and shake well.
Herbal Mouthwash ready to use
Keep the glass container with the herbal tincture in the bathroom on the counter along with a glass or cup.
For daily use, add about 40 drops of tincture to a mouthful of water and wash your mouth for about 30 seconds.
For a better cleansing, you can add 40 drops of the mixture to half and add half of mixture of hydrogen peroxide with water instead of normal water and wash your mouth for 30 seconds.
